La Fontanella Restaurant located in the Pilsen district of Chicago is Italian food made with love. They cook everything handmade, made to order, even their ice tea is brewed by them!
This South Side eatery has regular authentic Italian food with a friendly, retro ambience and basic Italian fare. La Fontanella has painted rough surface walls, checkerboard tablecloths and Louis Prima tunes on the stereo set a throwback mood at this historic spot, where servers seem to know customers by name.
This is a warm and comfortable place for an intimate dinner. The atmosphere reminded us of one of the private clubs in one of the Godfather movies.
We loved the oven warmed bread they provided for dipping in olive oil and freshly grated Asiago cheese, which was heavenly while you await your meals made with love. We first started with the Mussels which were OUT OF THIS WORLD! Perfect garlic blends and beautiful taste, gorgeous large fresh mussels. For our entrees, we ordered the spinach ravioli with marinara and the penne tascano with a fiery marinara sauce. We could have eaten both sauces straight with a spoon, they were wonderful.
We lucked up on a cold and snowy night calling 15 minutes before parking to request a reservation. However, with only about 8 tables in the restaurant, we highly recommend making reservation in advance.
The staff for the most part were sweet, happy people, who make you feel like they are cooking every meal just for you! What else could you want? If you want a quiet and quaint setting and italian food made with love. try this place!
