Ignotz is not the name you would imagine for a quaint little Italian restaurant in an authentic, ethnic neighborhood. The entry down the long narrow walkway is reminiscent of a speakeasy from days gone by. But the light is truly at the end of the tunnel.
On a cold winter night in Chicago, we were seated by the table for two near the fireplace, which was a nice touch for our date night.
The owner came and introduced himself to see how we were doing, which we think is always a nice touch.
We loved the fresh roasted garlic that came with the bread. Our salad was a decent size and the house dressing was divine. The mussels arrabiata were simply amazing and there was lots of bread to dip in the sauce that remained. The thin crust pizza was amazing. If you don’t see what you want on their menu, Ignotz’s staff will do their best to accommodate your request.
Noteworthy, your check is presented with Ignotz’s signature cherries dipped in chocolate, and nestled in a bed of fresh whipped cream.
This little gem is not at all pretentious and has real down home style food that is excellent.
